Be happy to read from someone who relishes in the oddities, who isn’t always tring to make you sympathetic and tearful. The first story about being an elf is Macy’s was perhaps the best, most sardonic and darkly humorous.
There were for sure some really funny observations, comments and thoughts, but on the whole I found the humour in this collection out of non-fiction stories rather monotonous than sparking-refreshing. The people who want photos, don’t want photos, the special children, the bold children, the spoiled children – but the ones that struck a chord with me were the ones who cracked jokes thinking they were completely unique, like the adults who would laughingly ask Santa for a BMW, a new husband, or a wife with bigger boobs.
Although Sedaris has claimed that the account is true, fact-checking by This American Life and others in the wake of the Mike Daisey Foxconn controversy has clouded the issue. I did like the first tale, the Christmas Whore tale and the final little bit, but everything else was just too, too much, especially the letter and the one-upmanship story. Now David will act as an elf in this story, the job is both hilarious and boring to fill.
I thought I reviewed this but I guess I forgot. He tells stories about the people who come and see Santa, and treats us to some anecdotes about the stranger people in our society. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? Mantello’s adaptation has since become a seasonal staple of regional, college and high-school theatre. There’s a parent who makes his child urinate in the fake snow. Refresh and davir again. That is what connects me to him and his writing, his humble humanity.

I wish he would stick to memoirs. The book a slim one was funny in its way but could not really equal Sedaris’s dry humour on air. There are the people who ask santtaland “a Santa of colour”. This story had me rolling on the floor it was so funny.
Thanks for telling us about the problem. Morning Edition airs srdaris reading every year, and for many, hearing Sedaris as Crumpet the elf has itself become a holiday tradition. That’s the only point on which my doctor and shrink agree. That was my first book by David Sedaris, I surely want to read his other works! The parts that others seem to be offended or put off by, I say read them with zeal, be happy that someone out there is making enough money off being a boob, off proudly being a boob to travel to Japan and France and across the U.

We have friends who send those obnoxious letters and include a heavily airbrushed studio portrait. I’ve tried to read this short story before, when I wasn’t familiar with David Sedaris. It really is a rare quality. Still, they insist on sending these braggy, upbeat letter that paint their lives in increasingly fake technicolor.
She was unforgettable in her beautiful Taco costume. I’m guessing David Sedaris’s humour has some moments that are just not for me. His offering was just too sedariss the top. The Taco girl -that lousy bitch- told me how she needed to focus more on her life, looking at it from different perspectives. It won’t blow you away, but it definitely shows promise in his writing ability that we see in his later works.
